About the Event
Kalil White is a self-taught artist who describes herself as an artist with no limits. She is open to learning many different art forms and mediums, so that she is better able to express her views as a queer black woman raised in the Deep South. Kalil was born and raised in between Leesville, LA and Augusta, GA due to her military family background. Coming from a strong matriarchal family rooted in southern black and country values, heavily influenced her passion for nature, community building and power, the black diaspora and blackness, and art.
Artist Statement
My artwork is a love letter to black women and centers the perspective of black women and girls navigating life in America in the 90's to late 2000s. My work explores the connections of black women and their influences in Popular Culture and Fine Art spaces. Utilizing ceramics, fabric art, and mixed media art as a means to explore their connections to these spaces and how they're woven and molded into the foundations of them. I use a variety of materials and mediums within each piece to express the complexities of the African American woman experience.
